This weekend I took Friday off so I could get a delivery of top soil to fill my beds that Mr L had made for me, I had 4 beds to fill. My plot is up at the top of a hill and because it has rained the path was slippy and pretty horrible. The top soil was delivered at 10.30am and I started barrowing it up the hill, I did 2 barrows before I enlisted the help of the biggest L who wasn't a very grumpy teenager and really did help me out (I only had to bribe him with a sausage sandwich and then when he’d done I bought him some books to say thanks!) It rained for most of the day; thus making the soil even heavier and it was just awful. By 5pm we hadn't even emptied the first bag and so I had to grovel to Mr L to get him to come and finish the job for me on Saturday morning – he was unimpressed. On the plus side I did more than 14,000 steps
I managed to get weed membrane down between my beds ready for when I can get some chippings but the area in front of the shed is so wet and awful and whilst I put some membrane down, every time anyone walked on it they sank into the mud; I'm going to have to think about how I'm going to manage that (any suggestions would be greatly received). Also the pathway into my plot is so muddy and awful from having to push the barrow on it over and over whilst it was raining. I really need a few dry days so that I can cover it. I don’t want to add anything non-organic in case I ever decide to move things around. I’ve been adding upside down turf over the muddy puddles to try and soak up the wetness but it’s not really adding enough solid mass to stop me from sinking! I’ve also had to fill some of the holes on the plot with the garden compost because they were pretty lethal but you also sink into them when you step on them – it’s ultra-annoying!
I’ve ended up having to move my bird feeding station from in front of the shed, which I was fed up about because I loved watching the birds while I was having a coffee. I’ve had a blackbird visiting but he's a very messy one and there were so many mealworms in my pond that I really couldn't leave it there. I've only moved it across the path but I'm hoping that I'll still be able to see the birds from inside the shed. On the plus side the birds are starting to perch on the archway which means that I can still see them and if I have the door of the shed open I can see them at the feeder.
Finally, I’m very excited because I ordered a polytunnel on Friday evening. I used First Tunnels after a little bit of research. I looked at a few sites but ended with a choice between First and Premier. The reason I ended up going with First was that when I priced it all up, because of their discounts (depending on how much you spend you can get 10%, 15% or 20%) First was cheaper than Premier. Also First include anti hot spot tape and hinged doors at both ends, both of which are extras at Premier. I opted to get both crop bars and twin support bars because I do want to hang baskets in the tunnel and they’ll add strength; I’m also conscious that my plot is at the top of a hill and although there are a few trees around it’s also next to a park so it can be quite exposed. I’ve also opted for anchor plates and aluminium base rails to avoid the need for digging a trench around the tunnel (which Mr L really didn’t want to do!)
I have been pretty impressed with their service so far. The process of ordering is really easy it’s very step by step and I ended up with a 15% discount. I finalised my order late on Friday night and they called me on Saturday to tell me that it would be delivered on Monday. The only downside is that because it’s a courier that they use, they can only ask them if they would call me before they deliver but they can’t guarantee that they will. I was hoping to get it delivered directly to the plot and work from home while I was waiting but because they don’t know if they’ll call me I’ve had to have it delivered to the house instead. It’s not a great hardship but it just slightly puts me out.
We’ve been watching videos about building a polytunnel and I might see if I can persuade the Biggest L to come and video us putting ours up – it will be good for a laugh even if it’s not particularly helpful!!
I hope you all have a great week - happy gardening
